Juventus remind England of Italy’s 2-1 win over them in 1990

On the eve of the big clash between Italy and England at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, at a time where a lot of banter will be thrown around, defending Serie A champions Juventus reminded England fans of Italy’s 2-1 victory over them the last time the two met each other in a World Cup. To refresh your memory, they faced each other in a 3rd/4th place match (yes, England got that far!) and the game was decided with a series of late goals.

Roberto Baggio had given Italy the lead with 20 minutes to spare but David Platt equalised just 10 minutes later. It was left for then Juventus striker, Salvatore Schillaci, to score the winner with just 3 minutes to play. Juventus’ banter stemmed from the fact that both the Italian scorers had a close relation to Juventus with Schillaci (as mentioned) playing for them and Roberto Baggio joining them soon after in an infamous move from rivals Fiorentina.

Another Juventus double in Brazil then? Marchisio maybe? Pirlo anyone?

“#ItalyEngland. It was the 3rd-place play-off at#Italia90. 2-1, Baggio, Platt, Schillaci. One was already at Juve and the other two would join soon” read the message.
