How did Twitter react to the Brazil – Germany game?

On the 8th of July, 2014, the world witnessed the greatest semi-final victory margin in a FIFA World Cup. An astonishing scoreline of 7-1 saw hosts Brazil, shredded, repeatedly, by a ruthless and dominant German team. While those 90 minutes unfurled, fans took to social media to express their disbelief, their joy and sorrow. Twitter was one of these social platforms that was hounded by fans all over the world. Twitter Data (@TwitterData) tweeted out saying that the game between Brazil and Germany resulted in 35.6 million tweets, making it the most discussed single sports game ever on Twitter.

Twitter’s geotagging services colaborated with CartoDB, a mapping service that helps visualize data better, and came out with this neat graphic that shows how the world responded, in tweets, to what has been a massive day in football history.
