It was a bit strange when Thomas Vermaelen completed his move to Barcelona from Arsenal. Usually, Gunners fans would be livid when a top European club comes in for one of their stars; and in recent seasons, many have made this same move, from Theirry Henry, to Alexander Hleb, Cesc Fabregas to Alex Song. But when the Belgian international defender left the Emirates for his new journey at the Nou Camp, Arsenal supporters weren’t exactly disappointed, in fact, they were quite excited that the club managed to demand £15m and receive that amount for a player that has been on the decline the last couple of months.
In fact, plenty were quite surprised that Barcelona saw Thomas Vermaelen as an answer to their defensive problems. Many expect the ex-Ajax defender to struggle at the Spanish giants. And struggle he has, though yet to have a kick of a football in Barcelona colours.
We had published a piece under our Viral feature of how Vermaelen was given a car by Barcelona, and it is an automobile that is again the focus of his Barcelona stint. Yet to make a competitive appearance, the struggles are already showing for Thomas. The 28-year-old seems to have got himself in a bit of sticky situation as he tried to get his car into parking prior to Barcelona’s game against Bilbao.
With plenty of fans waiting to catch a glimpse of their Barcelona stars, many may be left wondering just how Vermaelen will deal with defensive issues following what they saw first-hand with him in a car. The crowd assisted the defender as he struggled on the turn, with the player needing advice from security personnel as well. It’s a 2 minute video or so, but the struggle feels much longer.
He did eventually pull through, to the cheers of the gathered crowd, although it’s highly likely that they were sarcastic cheers. Poor Verm.
