Any hopes that Inter had of securing that final Champions League spot faded away on Saturday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bologna at the San Siro, and it could have been worse if it wasn’t for Samir Handanovic. Walter Mazzarri’s ex-team, Napoli, currently occupy that 3rd spot and are 14 points clear of Inter Milan. Inter can get a maximum of 18 points from their remaining games. Champions League hopes, well and truly over.
But the 2010 Champions League winners certainly made a case for themselves, led by young talent, Mauro Icardi. He put his side into an early lead but Bologna were able to get back and equalise. Mazzarri’s was clearly frustrated and would have made his feeling known to his players. They came out better in the second half and it was young Icardi again who produced the goods. The ex-Sampdoria made scored this peach of a goal (see below) to put Inter back in front. Fantastic technique and a surprisingly powerful shot.
