A first league title since 1996. First time in 9 years that one of the Clasico giants hasn’t claimed Spain’s top flight. An achievement with a fairly small squad, low budget and absolutely no expectation. Atletico Madrid are the perfect underdog story in European football for the last decade or so. And for the first time in 18 years a La Liga victory parade in Madrid wasn’t a sea of plain white, it was an unbelievable image of red & white stripes.
Despite the Champions League final in just a weeks time, Atletico Madrid went ahead with their La Liga victory parade, and the turn-out was fabulous. Atletico signify a ray of hope for other teams in Spanish football, hope that the duopoly doesn’t remain and this was evident in the thousands that took to the streets of Spain’s capital city.
Atletico’s Belgian defender, Toby Alderweireld, posted a video on instagram shot from his phone displaying the view the players had atop the bus. Put yourself in the shoes of Atletico players, imagine what they experienced. If this doesn’t inspire them, literally nothing else will
