Schalke suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of Real Madrid in front of their home fans in the first leg of the Round of 16 Champions League tie. It was a match dominated by Real Madrid, who scored 6 goals with a brace each for their attacking trio of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
The heavy defeat has certainly ended Schalke’s run in the Champions League, a bit unfortunate for neutrals looking to seem some attacking football. Certainly disappointing as one won’t be able to see Huntelaar smash balls into the back of the net.
The Dutch international was facing one of his ex-sides and was hoping to pull of a “small miracle” (in the word of Schalke boss, Jen Keller). The miracle didn’t come but Huntelaar did get a goal to his name. With Real Madrid leading 6-0, the 30-year-old who spent one season at the Spanish club, scored an incredible volley to get one goal back for the Germans; much to the delight of the home fans who stayed behind the side throughout the rout. A cross came in from Christian Fuchs and Huntelaar showed his technical ability with the finish, connecting sweetly with the ball
