Manchester United manager David Moyes has insisted he is confident Marouane Fellaini is finally beginning to justify his £27.5million price tag – which won’t have done much to convince United fans the Scotsman is the right man for the job. With United all but out of the race for a top-four finish, according to Betfair visitors, much of the team’s troubles this season have been placed at Fellaini’s door.
The Belgium international arrived at Old Trafford from Everton last summer following Moyes’ switch to United, but Fellaini has failed to win over the United supporters during a torrid first season at the club, with many Betfair fans tipping the midfielder to be on his way out of the club this summer.
As well as not scoring for his new club, Fellaini has often looked completely lost in the United midfield, failing to do many of the basics right, handing Moyes’ critics a lengthy stick to continually beat the Scotsman with during this Premier League season. Fellaini’s plight was highlighted by the fact the Spanish newspaper AS gave the Belgian midfielder 1 out of 10 for his performance in the 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich.
While most of the evidence points towards the contrary, Moyes has insisted he is convinced Fellaini is beginning to find his feet after a difficult first season at Old Trafford, even praising the 26-year old for how he played against Bayern, in a game United surprised many Betfair punters in by claiming the draw.
“It’s not an easy move coming to Manchester United, as I can tell you. For Marouane, I think it’s proved equally as difficult, but I have to say I think he has done a lot of good things and he has improved.”
“I actually thought Marouane got better as the game went on (against Bayern). We needed him and I thought he played very well,” insisted the Scotsman.
While Moyes might be convinced by Fellaini, it will take huge turnaround in fortunes for the Belgium midfielder to win over these United fans.
