After being ravaged by injuries and seeing their season crumble last season (despite finishing 2nd), Borussia Dortmund have moved quickly to ensure they have a large enough squad to deal better with similar circumstances. Bayern ofcourse remain the favourites again to retain their crown, it’s important that the Bundesliga has another side more effectively competing against Guardiola’s men. Dortmund’s latest signing will certainly add quality, depth and a bright future at the Westfalenstadion.
Borussia Dortmund have thus moved quickly to pick up the signing of Matthias Ginter from Bundesliga side Freiburg, for reportedly as little as €10 million. Ginter certainly is one of the best young defenders in the sport at this present time, though a few injuries have hampered his progress in the past.
Matthias Ginter was featured in our list of 100 Best Young Players to Watch-out for in 2014, coming in at #5 in our list of defenders. We were a bit skeptical about his World Cup chances, but he surprisingly made the squad. Ginter was one of 10 players we suggested that should be kept an eye on in the Bundesliga, prior to the start of the 2013-14 season and also published a small mid-season report on him in January earlier this year.
Although he never featured in Germany’s successful campaign, he is officially a World Cup winner at the tender age of 20. Not too many footballers (especially defenders) who can boast of such an achievement. It remains to be seen exactly what role is in store for Matthias Ginter as Germany do already have three central defenders ahead of him. But given the quality of players in the squad, Ginter has a lot to learn and can certainly make a claim for a first-team spot. Talent Radar will continue to track his progress throughout the season.
