Spurs have had a relatively quiet transfer window compared to last season’s buying spree. The focus has been on working with the squad Pochettino inherited and shoring up key areas. Much needed reinforcement in the left-back area arrived in the form of Ben Davies along with Vorm from Swansea. The centre-back area has been a bit of a concern as well. Dawson has been a great player for Spurs but it remains to be seen if Pochettino is convinced that he has the legs to play in his system. Enter Eric Dier.
Dier was a rare instance of an Englishman plying his trade in a foreign country. Having moved to Portugal at a young age, the 20 year-old received his footballing education at Sporting Clube de Portugal. He made his way up the ranks all the way up to the first team. There is no doubt that his style has been influenced by the famed Sporting Academy.
Dier featured at #22 in the best young defenders section of 100 Best Young Players to watch in 2014. The young defender has had spells with Everton in the past which will help him settle in the Premier League and a style of football that will be different from the Primeira Liga.
Dier is more than comfortable with the ball at his feet and also boasts of versatility. He’s capable of playing as a midfielder too if required but with Spurs’ talent in that department that shouldn’t be an immediate requisite. At a reported price of around £4m, Spurs have snapped up a player with good potential. Talent Radar will continue to track his progress throughout the season.
