After a surprisingly excellent start to the season, Southampton managed to step on their own laces and stumbled a bit. Many avid watchers may have predicted this but in an attempt to prove them wrong, Ronald Koeman’s side are currently on a 4 match unbeaten run, registering three wins and a draw against table tops, Chelsea.
Their latest win was at St. Mary’s against an Arsenal side who haven’t been very convincing this season. Tactics employed by the Dutch coach clearly worked, Southampton taking all three points from the game with a 2-0 victory. Certain aspects of the game were massively evident, such as the lack of proper marking or pressing of Victor Wanyama, who’s performance was definitely a major reason for the Saints’ win. The three men up front for Southampton were visible narrow, working the numbers against the Arsenal defence. Krzysztof Sierocki has a video analysis depicting the way Koeman’s side worked when in possession of the ball.
