The argument of the introduction of safe standing areas in the England and Wales is one that has been gathering pace in recent times. Any discussion regarding the issue is of course bound to be linked to the Hillsborough tragedy and understandably so given the scale of the tragedy and its effect on the game in England. However, with a host of German football clubs ensuring safe standing, the time seems to be ripe for England to follow in their footsteps.
The right to stand while watching football games seems to be a petty issue but there’s no doubt that it makes a big difference in the atmosphere at the stadium and the personal experience of the match going fans. Let’s face it, a crowd of fans remaining seated throughout the game taking selfies is not the recipe for an electric atmosphere. This may be an unfair generalization and there are plenty of fans in the Premier League and beyond who shout their lungs out regardless of the rules. An organized and scientific approach to safe standing areas could work wonders to improve the atmosphere at games and the fans can go about supporting their team with passion without the stewards having to intervene.
YouTube channel, Copa90, have covered the essentials of the issue well in the above video and we certainly hope that this is something we can see in the near future.
