Despite finishing 2nd in the Premier League table, Liverpool topped the Premier League revenue chart for 2013/14 earning £97 million. Manchester City were second in the revenue table at £96 million, followed by Chelsea & Arsenal which is in tandem with the Premier League final standings as well.
Liverpool’s games were picked for live television, more than anyone else and this reflects in the facility fees earning £21 million in that regard. The remaining revenue is equally shared, while Merit Payment is given based on the league position, Manchester City thus getting £24 million for their title winning season.
The £97 million which Liverpool received is the highest amount any Premier League club has ever received throughout history, as stated on their website, further emphasising the success the Merseyside club has experienced this past campaign. While finishing in the top four has it’s financial benefits, which the club would be eager to receive to implement their FFP complaint financial model, the revenue earned will definitely please the Board. No doubt that Rodgers’ men will be disappointed at not winning the Premier League, and ending their drought, financially they couldn’t have expected more. More reasons to be pleased.
It’s remarkable how much Premier League revenue has gone up. The highest earners in the 2012/13 season were Manchester United, earning £60 million. To put that into perspective, 20th place Cardiff City have earned more than that amount this season. Remarkable really. All clubs have nearly doubled their revenue from the previous campaign.
The biggest reason for that change is the facility fees as highest earners Liverpool have nearly doubled the amount under that head as compared to Manchester United did last season (who were the highest earners). Remarkable that Manchester United earned higher revenue in their worst ever Premier League campaign as compared to their 20th title winning season.
The overseas television deal also saw a steep rise, £18.9 million from 2012/13 to £8 million more this season. And this is only expected to rise as we see the league’s global popularity grow. With the Premier League increasing it’s basic share by another £8 million, the member clubs are seeing benefits. Just participating in the Premier League will earn you over a million based on ‘merit’. Last season’s bottom club, Queens Park Rangers earned just £750,000 in Merit payments, compared to this season bottom club, Cardiff City, who earned £1.2 million.
