Atletico Madrid’s incredible achievement last time around saw the duopoly in Spanish football broken. As incredible as the Barcelona and Real Madrid sides have been in the modern era (and historically of course), there were plenty of neutrals willing Diego Simeone’s men to glory. However, if winning the league was an achievement of gargantuan proportions, then defending their title was a near impossible challenge.
With the loss of 3 key personnel for Atletico, it was always going to be between Real Madrid and Barcelona and that’s how it has turned out. The capital club started off the blocks quickly and indeed for their long unbeaten run looked like favourites for the title especially with Luis Enrique’s troubles in the first half of the season. There’s been a big reversal in fortunes since and led by perhaps the best front 3 in the world in Messi, Neymar, and Suarez, Enrique’s men have propelled themselves to the title and the Champions League final to boot.
La Liga enthusiasts will be quick to point out that there’s plenty of quality outside the top 3. Sevilla have proven their quality on the continental stage once again making it to the Europa League finals and special mention to Nuno Esprito’s exciting Valencia team with the likes of Jose Gaya and Paco Alcacer putting in noteworthy performances throughout the campaign. With a new look Spanish International squad, there’s a definite air of change in Spain.
